Cairn Lanka (Private) Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of CIG Mauritius Holdings Private Limited under Cairn India. Cairn India Limited is one of the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in India with a market capitalisation of ~US$ 11 billion. Cairn India was rated as the fastest-growing energy company in the world, as per 2012 & 2013 Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings. Cairn Lanka Limited has played a leading role in establishing the hydrocarbon resources of Sri Lanka
In July 2008, the Government of Sri Lanka and Cairn India signed the Petroleum Resources Agreement for the exploration licence permitting Cairn India to explore oil and natural gas in the Mannar Basin.
The Block SL 2007-01-001, which is in offshore North West Sri Lanka and covers approximately 3,000 Km2 in water depths of 200 to 1,800m, was awarded to Cairn India through a bid round held in 2008. Cairn Lanka is the operator with 100 % participating interest.
Through this exploration licence, Cairn Lanka (Private) Limited revived the hydrocarbon exploration activity in Sri Lanka after more than two decades and also, as a result, heralded initiation of deep-water exploration in Sri Lanka.
The exploration activities carried out by Cairn Lanka (Private) Limited resulted in two successive gas discoveries: the CLPL-Dorado-91H/1z well and, the CLPL-Barracuda-1G/1 well.
In 2013, Cairn Lanka concluded appraisal and commercial studies to determine the next steps for the gas discoveries made on the block. The company is in discussions with the Sri Lankan Government regarding commercial terms necessary to monetize the discovered gas resources on the block. Cairn Lanka also participated in Sri Lanka’s offshore bidding round for M-5 block, south of our current block in the Mannar Basin in November 2013.
